DAY 1: What Is There To Say About Amarillo???

* DAY 1:  July 4, 2011, Amarillo, TX
TEMP:  100

As I'm sitting here struggling to find something nice to say about Amarillo, I thought I'd just give you a short, very short, picture of our day today....

* We remembered to unplug the RV this time before pulling out of the driveway....YEA!!!

* About 15 minutes into the trip, Chuck makes this major announcement: "If I drop dead or something, the cat food is in the front lower section of the motorhome."

* We have come to learn that Amarillo is known for just 4 things:

1)  They make statues of  legs and place them on the side of the roads....

2)  They bury their deceased Cadillacs on the side of the road....but not together with the leg statues....that's against the law.

3)  The serve 1/2 a cow called the Big Texan 72 Ounce Steak Dinner.  It's FREE if you can eat the whole thing in an hour, but if you can't.....it'll cost you a cool $79.

4) And last but not least, they really love their signs......I literally had to stop the RV in the road just to read them all.

Due to the exceptionally early hour we hit the road, I'm tuckered out and heading to the rear of the RV.

G'night!!

Liz & Bur,

Amarillo is also the home of Bur's oldest surviving aunt, Jean Bradford, who is now 86 and still a volunteer at the local hospital. Her daughter, Debbie, and Debbie's husband, Brock, also live there. Brock is a chiropractor. They have several children and grandchildren in the area as well. Jean was married to Bur's namesake, Charles Bradford, his mom's (Nell) only brother. Charley, as he was called, was a WWII veteran and a jack of all trades.

I hope y'all had a chance to call and say "Hi".

Debbie has proposed a family gathering somewhere in the Dallas area this fall. Are you guys interested in this?

Did you say signs.....looks like SIGNS! One wave after the other......and I bet there is a minimum speed limit
there! They need to make a "roundabout" so you can go around and around until you have read all the
signs! And 100 degrees.....is it far to Colorado? and is this on the way??
Did you catch any fireworks? The yahoos around here were setting them off all night.....I kept praying for
my new roof to not burn. Thank heavens it rained in the afternoon so that probably saved it. Of course I am
sure they had plenty of liability insurance if they caused any damage....being renters just moving in with
suitcases!!! How they can afford fireworks is beyond me....probably because they are on food stamps......and
of course they have their priorities in order...right?

Well, my neighbor across the street put in one of this big security lights and it floods his yard and street....so
I decided to put one up in my yard and it really does a neat job of lighting everything up...comes on a dusk and
goes off at dawn. In addition, the power company cut all the trees away from the power lines and big
junction box......just in time for hurricane season....thank goodness.

Did you ever get to stop in that park (state park, I think) in west texas that is the "darkest place on
earth....it makes the milky way look like you could reach up and touch it.....'" Sounds so interesting.
You all take care on the road....people are crazy out there. and have lots of fun.
Love you both lots and lots.
