DAY 20: Making Friends In The Most Unusual Places......

DAY 20: Ouray (pronounced Ooh-RAY), Colorado
TEMP:  79 Degrees

I want it made known; I AM NOT complaining......We were lucky and blessed to have this itsy-bitsy spot to park ourselves on at all.

This is our campground......Ouray RV Park, and we are in a loooong line of Class A motorohomes that are REAAAAL close together.

See.....

That's our awning on the left.....our neighbor's awning on the right.........It's a darn good thing we like our neighbors......

This is a cool view.....I took this using my iPhone camera through the bincocular eyepiece of the mountain across from us....looking for a BEAR.......didn't find any.......
Then, late this afternoon, we decided to hop on the ol' trike and head to Silverton on the fabulous Million Dollar Highway about 23 miles away for ice cream....

While on the way there, we round a blind-tight- hairpin-curve to find a Toyota Camry parked in the middle of the highway.  I first just figured they had stopped to take pictures of the canyon thousands of feet below, cause that's what I would have been doing, but as I cautiously moved into the oncoming lane to pass them, I did what Liz usually does......I honked at them.

But once we safely passed them, Chuck said we needed to turn around and go back.....he said something must be terribly wrong for them to park their car in the middle of a blind curve like that.......so we turned around.  Sure enough, their rental Toyota Camry had broken down.  They were in a horrible location, so while they tried to call for help, Chuck and I went down the road and flagged oncoming cars to slow down.

Long story short, a tow truck finally arrived, but there were 5 of them and only 3 could ride in the tow truck, so I drove Chuck back down to Ouray, dropped him off at an ice cream store, went back up on the mountain and picked up the man and his 6 year old son and drove them back down to Ouray, past Chuck eating ice cream, to the service station where they had towed the car.

Such a nice family from Beaumont, Texas........and their parting words to us?

"We'll be praying for you"........

You're in one of our favorite places in the world! Make sure and take your trike up the mountain side to the Amphitheater Campground (our camping spot) http://www.ouraycolorado.com/amphitheater. We love the local hot tub (olympic size) too if you haven't been there.

Have fun...wish we were there:) Love your blog!

Sorry we missed you when you came to Salida. We were in Ouray/Silverton/Durango this week too, can’t believe we’ve missed in both places. We did the train ride which was fun and absolutely beautiful. We are leaving Thursday to go to Yellowstone, Are you going there too so we can miss once again? We had a very similar situation one winter when we went to Ouray/Silverton. A little VW was stopped on the road on that wonderful hwy and we stopped to see if we could help. It was winter and a big storm was brewing, an 18 wheeler came up that “hill” and had to stop behind the VW, the guys picked up that little car and moved it over so the big un could pass then we got that lil car going up that hill. So, don’t drive VW’s up that big “hill” if it doesn’t have the power. Scary but a good deed for both of us.

Blessings, Doy & Arlen

The people in the broken down car may have been angels waiting to see what you would do.......you did the right thing. Bread on the water comes home to you in loaves and loaves.

I closed my eyes when it came to the ice cream cone.......get behind me satan!

You all have the most interesting experiences and write them up so neatly.....I live vicariously through your experiences! Keep on blogging.
Love to both, ant ellie

You are now the hero's of a story that will be told around family gatherings for years to come. They may not remember anything else about this vacation, but they will remember you and Charlie. The power of a God filled life sends out ripples that we will not know the power of until heaven. I love you sissie and you Charlie
