DAY 1: Wonderful World of Biking Journey

We are starting DAY 1 of our Wonderful World of Biking Journey through the Netherlands, and while my thighs might be getting a slight assist from my electric steed (yes, yes, yes, E-BIKE...do not judge me!!), my enthusiasm is 100% pedal-powered, so no judging the future Tour de France champion in training!

We started out with a drizzly, yucky COLD day as our seats (not our butts....that comes later) were adjusted and we took a practice run through the cobblestone streets of Hoorn. No injuries...yet.

In no time at all, the drizzle was replaced with windmills, tulip fields and beautiful churches. Gorgeous! We learned what it meant to "take a corner" and tasted our first Danish Apple Pie at the first pit stop. Oh wow. We are SO addicted! Wayne has said no less than 10x a day since being home, "I sure would like a piece of Danish Apple Pie". I'm seeing a weight-loss program in our future.

A few "breakdowns".....naps on a grassy hill.....a Danish walker or two yelling "STUPID-O" at us as we learned the "rules" of biking in the Netherlands where you can't read the signs, we found ourselves awed by the beauty of Alkmaar where we stopped for lunch.

We looked like a bunch of baby ducks following their Mama as we lined up behind our guide Tammy.....navigating traffic signs we couldn't understand and only remembering her saying, "When you see shark teeth at the intersections, you MUST YIELD!". Most of the time we did....but there were those times.....well.......

Truth is, our eyes saw places and things we had never before seen. We were far too busy looking at the scenery to look for "shark teeth".

After about 8 hours on the bike, we arrived safely back to the boat, which had moved during our ride, to our Day 2 destination: Medemblik. This is when we adjusted our "other" seats: our butts.

See you tomorrow for Day 2!! You don't want to miss Day 2!! Just sayin'......
