OURAY - Here We Come!!!

June 18, 2014

OURAY......HERE WE COME!!!!

I am SO dang excited I can hardly stand myself.

We just made reservations to head back to Ouray, CO the end of August!  Remember me telling you....and SHOWING you.....the 362 pictures of the hair-pin turns going up, and then down....and then up again....the Black Bear Pass where the "path" was so narrow, the Jeep was scraping the side of the cliff walls and the best seat in the Jeep was the rear drivers side where your butt was hanging off the cliff when he had to back up to make the turn??   And did I mention there is NO road.....just a path where others have fallen off the cliff before you?

Oh ya......makes me giddy just typing those words!!

We are headed back there......but this time, no motorhome and no motorcycle trike....

Sad Sigh

But none of that matters......we are going back!!!!!  The only issue we are trying to figure out is how we will "communicate" with each other while on the road to Colorado.

See, we have this handicap minivan that is NOISY......like....floor-has-been-modified-(lowered)-for-a- wheelchair-no-carpet-metal-shell NOISY.  And I have this husband who is hard of hearing....like.....deaf-as-a-doornail-must-use-sign-language DEAF.  Our conversations are beyond bizarre each time we ride in it and now we will be traveling 1000 miles each way.

WHAT TO DO???

After scratching our heads a bit on how best to handle this problem, I had a lightbulb moment.  I thought if we only had an intercom system like we had on our motorcycle helmets where we could talk to each other, that would work GREAT for us on this road trip.  The sound goes directly into our ears and I never once had trouble hearing Chuck crunching on his almonds and he never once missed me yelling at him while we had these on.

So........here's our solution.  WHALL-AAAAA!!!!

Can't wait!!!!!

No way you'd get me on that pass! Are you crazy?! Do you know about gravity? Especially when combines with slippery, rolling rocks? Do you have a death wish???!!!

If I were going myself, I wouldn't be any more thrilled!!!! On the road again!!! Shortly after Charlie died, Matt, Eric, and i wanted to make one last trip before Eric got married. (We knew things would change forever). We headed to Ouray, rented a jeep, took out as much insurance as possible, and headed up the mountains! What a trip - probably the best one we ever had! And we all agree on that one! Eric found a ring on tip of the mountain, with no one else anywhere around - for miles. He wears that ring to this day. If you have a chance, send pictures. NOBODY would appreciate them more than I would! Bon voyage, my friend. And by the way, Happy Birthday just a few days early!!! Much, much love, LIz

Yayyyy............I'm SO thrilled for you both. And I just love the helmets IN THE CAR. Perfect. There is always an answer when there is a question. Bet you stay awhile too, yes? I would!! Hope to see you this weekend sometime....for your birthday. I'm doing the painting party on Saturday night in SS. Wish you and all your buddies would come celebrate with us there :) OTHERWISE, I need to hug your neck and give you a goodie!

And congratulations again on the trip!!

Love you,
Kathy

Oh God, this is so funny and poignant. My sister and I went to Ouray with all my cousins and Grand Parents every year when I was Five to Eight years old. The thermal-heated public pool was such magic. All of us got ear infections as a result, but it was sooooo worth it. The drive there which was, frankly, terrifying, but we always stopped at the abandoned mines in the area and explored all of them. Absolutely some of the best memories I've ever had.

Enjoy, dear friends. Hold on to Chuck, Liz, and re-experience your love of beauty and each other. My heart is with you. Love, Sandee

Liz & Chuck, When we went to Ouray, my Daddy was driving an 1960 Chevy and we realized it was 27 miles up and 4 miles down. I think I screamed in his ear once. We stopped and all got out and looked at the rest of the road. My sister kept her eyes closed the rest of the way down....I kept looking overboard and was deliciously afraid. So many memories you are giving me. Love, Sandee

Hey girl, I am really happy for you. I am sure you will have a very
enjoyable time. You both have more brass than I do, that looks about
as wide as the trails going down into Grand Canyon on a horse or mule.
I want to know who got out of the jeep and took that picture!!!
Thanks for sending that! Hope to see you Sunday.

Love You,
John

Hey, Liz...if you're still around Ouray, we return to our place between Silverton and Durango on Aug. 29. If you're driving from Ouray to Durango, you pass right by it. Would love to see you, meet your husband and have a cup of coffee. Take care.

Pam Welch said...

Is there ANY way possible to get there other than that pass??? Seriously, I almost throw up just thinking about it... Have you lost your ever-lovin' MIND?????!!!!!!

Jenni Morse said...

Love the solution! Would need a Valium for that drive.
